It’s Getting Worse

July 30, 2010

Can you believe that Hydro customers will now be on the hook for paying the damages of a lawsuit filed against Hydro for loan sharking. Peter Small from The Toronto Star reported that a ruling of $17,000,000.00 was just issued against the utility. They are applying to the Ontario Energy Board to raise their rates to pay for this. So..they cheat and steal, and we, the consumer has to pay!! I am outraged. What about you. Now is the time to switch away from Toronto Hydro to an alternate provider to avoid getting hit by this new scam.

See the article here and make sure to comment and voice your outrage at this injustice.

Hydro Price Shock!!

July 29, 2010

Yesterday, in The Toronto Star, John Spears wrote about the fact that Hydro customers will get a jolt from the sharp increase in their bills this month. The utility, worrying about customer backlash, launched a campaign to prepare customers for this shock. To make matters worse, due to the hot summer we are having, people have been using a lot more hydro than usual to cool their homes. Even worse, this is just the beginning. Rates will continue to rise to pat for the expensive green power that the province mandated through the Green Energy Act and the FIT program. Life is going to change drastically as our energy becomes less affordable.

Solar Power Creativity

July 19, 2010

I found this interesting article on Tree Huggers about a solar powered pontoon boat that Monte Gisborne retrofitted.  He calls it The LOON. He is able to navigate the entire Trent-Severn Waterway with no fuel costs.

Solar Air Conditioning! Is this possible?

July 18, 2010

Would you believe that solar-powered air conditioning is in the works? Soon you will be able to crank up the air without a tinge of “eco guilt”. The technology to do this is called Absorption refrigeration. This technology is currently used in RV’s to keep the refrigerators working when the power is off. Believe it or not, it relies on heat from a propane flame to keep a chemical reaction going that actually cools. Now, some creative engineers decided to use solar heat to do the same thing, resulting in solar cooling.

Some day your home will be cooled by the power of the sun. The hotter the sun gets, the more your air conditioner will cool with no environmental penalty.

MicroFIT Program – Dalton Fibs Again

July 12, 2010

Today, in The Toronto Sun, Connie Woodstock reports that the OPA has suddenly reduced the electricity contracts awarded to farm based solar farms from $.80/kw to $.588/kw. This had the effect of killing thousands of projects that will no longer be financially viable. Solar companies are livid that their business will evaporate since these projects will no longer make financial sense with the reduced rates being offered. Please see the article and let me know what you think.

Ontario Is Headed For Energy Crisis

July 11, 2010

Today in the Toronto Sun editorial, they raise the issue of very poor planning that our provincial governments are guilty of regarding our power generation and distribution infrastructures. It is quite scary that we simply do not have enough power for our needs and our grid is terribly run down and obsolete. There is no way our system can support any growth in manufacturing. If it wasn’t for the fact that our manufacturing sector has been decimated, we would not have nearly enough power and distribution to support our needs. How are we in Ontario going to crawl out of this recession if we do not have enough electricity, our taxes are so high and our labour laws are from the worst in North America.  (Please see Fraser Institute  Study at side margin) How will potential employers even consider our province to establish their businesses? Have you ever discussed this with your MPP? Did you challenge Premier Dalton McGuinty with these questions? This is our future. Who is navigating our course? Without meticulous planning, how will Ontario become an economic powerhouse?

Please see the article from The Toronto Sun at the right side of the margin. It is titled, Does Dalton McGuinty Have a Power Plan?

Space Age Boiler Technology

July 10, 2010

This week we installed an Evolution Heating and Domestic Hot Water Boiler. It is an awesome appliance since it has the most efficient technology, is very efficient, virtually maintenance free, and very well priced. It is even solar enabled. A product like this is only introduced into the market place once in 10 years. If your home uses a boiler for heat, this is the product for you.

Check out a video on this great boiler here.

Fujitsu Multi Zone Air Conditioner

July 9, 2010

This week we installed a 3-zone Fujitsu Ductless heat pump. Each of the 3 indoor units were installed into bedrooms that until now could not be used on hot summer days because of the stifling heat. Now even the master bedroom in the loft on the 3rd floor is cool and comfortable. The great thing about the Fujitsu unit is its ability to modulate the cooling output in  the summer and the heating output in the winter to exactly match the heating and cooling load of the room. This translates into a high level of comfort that the homeowner never imagined possible. It also translates into extremely high efficiencies.

We are getting so many calls these days from people interested in ductless systems. These are great units that can provide cooling in homes without a duct system. This home also got a new high efficiency boiler that I will tell you about next time.

Another great application for these ductless units are to supplement cooling in specific rooms such as a master bedrom or living room where a party is being hosted and requires extra cooling. If you think these units don’t look nice, think again. LG makes units that look just like picture frames that you mount your own picture into. They also have many more decorative units to match any decor.

Check out these units at Fujitsu and LG.
