Is My Air Conditioner Working?

Many people call me when it is so hot to complain that their air conditioners are unable to reach setpoint. This is not unusual. In Toronto, most systems are sized to be able to cool your home 15 – 20 degrees Fahrenheit or 8- 12 degrees Celcius cooler than the outdoor ambient temperatures. When it is the equivalent of 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside or 40 degrees Celcius, your system is probably designed to cool your home down to 80 degrees Fahrenheit or 27 degrees Celcius. This is quite normal. You are able to upgrade your air conditioner to cool your home even more than that if you like. This is something to discuss with your home comfort specialist when you are considering an equipment upgrade. Keep in mind that oversizing your air conditioner for these times has disadvantages as well. I recommend installing a 2-stage air conditioner that can provide maximum cooling when it is really hot and normal cooling for more moderate weather. As a matter of fact, I am installing just this system in my own home. Check it out.
